What?

A project to create a digital library infrastructure for resources in a variety of formats, including sound, archives, film and images, from various disciplines, including music, art history, theatre, film and television, psychology, language and linguistics, archaeology, along with archival collections from the Borthwick Institute.

Where?

The University of York.

Who?

Library & Archives, working with Computing Service, the Yorkshare VLE and White Rose Research Online (WRRO), with support from the Academic Advisory Group and Steering Group.

When?

Now and for the foreseeable future … the SAFIR phase started August 2007 for 11 months. The Digital Library project as a whole runs until July 2010 when the Digital Library will become a service of the library.

How?

The Digital Library project received funding from a University benefaction. The SAFIR phase has been part-funded by JISC. Future funding opportunities will be sought.

Why?

The digital library aims to:

  • support teaching and research by giving more access to more resources, more easily
  • facilitate greater cross-disciplinary access to resources
  • provide an infrastructure for developing new, innovative services
  • offer a platform for future funding proposals and increased opportunities for partnerships
  • provide a long-term home for digital resources created during short-term research projects
  • preserve fragile originals by offering digital surrogates
  • offer facilities for building collections, with fine-grained access control
  • integrate with existing systems, such as the Yorkshare VLE and WRRO
  • interoperate with external services
  • act as a showcase for York’s teaching and research resources
